Countess Mountbatten was a British aristocrat and socialite, best known for her close relationship with the British royal family, particularly with Prince Charles. She was a cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Born Edwina Cynthia Annette Ashley on November 28, 1923, in Hampshire, England, Countess Mountbatten was the only child of Major the Honourable Maurice Ashley and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Cole. Her father was a Conservative politician and her mother was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Enniskillen. She was educated at Queen's College, London, and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. During World War II, she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). In 1947, she married David Mountbatten, 3rd Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who was the last Viceroy of India. The couple had two daughters, Patricia and Pamela. Countess Mountbatten was a close friend and confidante of Prince Charles. She was often seen at royal events and was considered to be one of the most influential people in his life. She was also a patron of many charities and was known for her work with the elderly and disabled. She died on June 14, 2017, at the age of 93. Her death was met with sadness by the royal family and the wider public.
