What Happened to Diamond DeShields? Teresa Weatherspoon Gives Another Distressing Injury Update for Chicago Sky

Diamond DeShields Injury Update

WNBA star Diamond DeShields suffered a torn ACL in her right knee during Thursday's preseason game against the Dallas Wings. The Chicago Sky guard underwent an MRI on Friday which confirmed the severity of the injury, according to a statement from the team. DeShields is expected to miss the entire 2023 season as a result of this devastating injury.

This is a major blow to the Sky, who were already without star forward Candace Parker, who is recovering from offseason ankle surgery. DeShields was expected to be a key contributor for the Sky this season after averaging 16.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last year.

The Sky have not yet announced a timetable for DeShields' return to action, but it is likely that she will miss the entire season. This is a significant loss for the Sky, as DeShields is one of the most talented and versatile players in the WNBA.

Diamond DeShields Injury History

DeShields missed 17 games last season with a sprained MCL in her right knee. Chicago went 9-8 in those games, and DeShields returned in the playoffs and averaged 15.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in four games.

She was a key contributor to the Sky's run to the semifinals last season, and her absence will be felt deeply. The Sky will need other players to step up and fill the void left by DeShields.

Teresa Weatherspoon Gives Distressing Update

Chicago Sky general manager and coach Teresa Weatherspoon was visibly distressed when she spoke to the media about DeShields' injury. "It's a tough blow for our team," Weatherspoon said. "Diamond is a special player, and she's going to be missed."

"But we're going to rally around each other and we're going to play hard for her," Weatherspoon added.

The Sky will have to make some adjustments to their lineup in the wake of DeShields' injury. Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, and Kahleah Copper will likely see their roles increase. The Sky may also look to add a player through free agency or a trade to help fill the void left by DeShields.

Despite the setback, the Sky remain confident in their ability to compete for a championship this season. They have a strong core of players, and they are hopeful that DeShields will be able to return to action next season.
