Daniel Bethell looks to family support to upgrade silver to gold in Paris
London 2012 Paralympics silver medallist hoping to make amends for Beijing disappointment by winning visually impaired marathon at World Para Athletics Championships
Daniel Bethell is hoping to upgrade his Paralympic silver medal to gold in Paris next summer as he targets success at the World Para Athletics Championships.
The visually impaired marathon runner finished second at the London 2012 Paralympic Games but was disqualified from the Beijing 2008 Games for a lane infringement.
Bethell, 36, is now looking to make amends for that disappointment by winning gold in the French capital.
“I’m really excited about the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris,” said Bethell.
“I’ve been working hard in training and I’m feeling in good shape.
“I know it will be a tough race, but I’m confident that I can do well.”
Bethell's journey to the top
Bethell was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that causes gradual sight loss.
He started running in his early 20s and quickly showed a talent for the sport.
Bethell made his Paralympic debut at the Beijing 2008 Games, where he finished sixth in the 1500m.
He went on to win silver in the marathon at the London 2012 Games and bronze in the 5000m at the Rio 2016 Games.
Bethell is now one of the most experienced and successful visually impaired marathon runners in the world.
Bethell's training regime
Bethell trains six days a week, running between 80 and 100 miles.
He also does strength and conditioning work in the gym.
“My training is tough, but it’s what I need to do to be successful,” said Bethell.
“I’m always looking for ways to improve, and I’m always working hard to get better.
“I know that if I keep working hard, I can achieve my goals.”
Bethell's family support
Bethell’s family has been a huge source of support throughout his career.
His wife, Sarah, is a former marathon runner and she helps him with his training.
His parents, David and Susan, are also very supportive.
“My family has always been there for me,” said Bethell.
“They’ve supported me every step of the way.
“I’m so grateful for their love and support.”
Bethell's future goals
Bethell is looking to continue his success at the highest level.
He is targeting gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris next summer.
He is also hoping to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
“I’m still hungry for success,” said Bethell.
“I want to win more medals and I want to continue to inspire others.
“I know that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”
