850 more positions for border police and justice - Herrmann demands rejections at the borders

Bavaria is stepping up the fight against illegal immigration and crime.

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) has announced that 850 new positions will be created in the Bavarian police and justice system. The focus will be on border protection and combating illegal immigration. "We must do everything we can to protect our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens," Herrmann said. He also called for the reintroduction of border controls at the EU's external border.

The 850 new positions will be distributed as follows: 500 for the Bavarian border police, 200 for the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) and 150 for the Bavarian judiciary. The new border police officers will be deployed to the Bavarian-Austrian border and to the Bavarian-Czech border. They will work to prevent illegal border crossings and smuggling.

The new LKA officers will be responsible for combating organized crime and terrorism.

The new judiciary officers will be responsible for prosecuting crimes related to illegal immigration and terrorism. Herrmann also emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the federal government and neighboring countries in the fight against illegal immigration and crime. "We must work together to protect our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens," he said.

Background: The number of illegal border crossings in Bavaria has increased significantly in recent years.

In 2022, there were over 15,000 illegal border crossings in Bavaria, compared to just under 5,000 in 2015. Most of the illegal border crossings are from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Bavarian government has already taken a number of measures to combat illegal immigration, including increasing the number of border police officers and introducing mobile border controls.
